Where I’m From
By Brittany Rich

I am Brittany
I am black like night sky
Black like a T-shirt
I am from Bushwick
I am not a hoe
Or easy to get with
Or trying to claim a gang I am not with
I am a basketball player for the WNBA
I am a lover of hip hop
Standing there, deep as water, into each song
In my mind
I am the richest person alive
Where all the money is made
I once thought I would be poor and homeless
But I have a mansion standing right before me
I thought everyone wanted to be themselves
But now everyone wants to be like me

I am Brittany
Black as the night sky
I am from Bushwick

It’s Not Fast and the Furious
By Antonio Aguilar

Sebastian drove to Odalys house he was playing the radio it was hot97. The song was “Ridin Dirty” by Chamillonare. You can feel the bass vibrating the floor. Then Sebastian called Odalys on his cell phone in his sidekick dos (two). She picked up and said she was taking a shower.

She said, “Hold on for a minute. I have to put my clothes and jacket. I will come down stairs.”

He said, “OK,” then went to the car el civic ek9 and turned it on. You can hear the power in that motor (TYPE-R). Odalys came out and got into the car. And they went on their way. He asked Odalys about were she wanted to go.

Odalys thought, “Oh, there is a new movie coming out today. It’s a scary movie. The people are locked in a house all of them are going to get killed.”

He said “OK.” So they went on their way to the movies. Sebastian was speed racing though the city streets switching from third to fourth gear. You can feel the Torque. You can see her face really liking the speed. Then another civic pulled up to the red stop light. Sebastian revved his engine, then the civic revved too. Sebastian looked to see who was in the civic. It was a girl! She blew a kiss she honked the horn three times. Meaning 1, 2, 3 go! ‘’Green.” Then Sebastian took his foot off the clutch and switched the gear like his life depended on it. The girl in the civic was fast too. She kept up with Sebastian. Then he turns on the hazards to signal his victory. Then she lit up her hazard lights meaning she wants to race again. Sebastian wanted to, but the movie theater was on the next block. So Sebastian parked the car in the theater parking lot and locked the doors with his beeper alarm ‘‘beep’’ ‘‘beep.’’ To his surprise the girl with the civic came to the theater as well. Sebastian was shocked the girl was alone; she looked like the movie star Lucy Lu--very sexy with a girly girl racing skirt and…

Sebastian bought the movie tickets as the civic girl kept looking at him. Odalys and Sebastian entered the movie called “See No Evil.” As they left the theater after the movie, they went towards his car. Beep. Beep. Inside the car and Sebastian was shocked. He saw the girl with the Honda but she was not alone she was with another car driven by another girl. The car was about a 99-00 Acura Integra Type-R. Both girls revved there engines “vrommmmm” and the girl with the Integra did a burn out. The street was fogged up with tire smoke. Sebastian started to do a burn out and the tires were spinning and spinning. The whole block was filling up with the tire smoke. The only thing you could see was Sebastian’s bright pink hids. So Sebastian drove off to Odalys house. But the two girls were following him,

Sebastian told Odalys, “Let’s give them a show. “ He flew through a couple of red lights. But the two girls kept up so then he drove across a cop car. He drove so fast the cops didn’t have time to follow them. The girls were still with him so then he drove to the highway. He was going about a 110mph and the girls were still with him. There was a hard left turn coming up. Sebastian took the turn badly and the car spun around like a toy car. It hit, flipped, and spun around. Odalys died instantly. Sebastian was shocked and hurt pretty bad. He looked at Odalys and started to cry.

Later, Sebastian found out it was a drink driver that hit Sebastian’s car. All four cars lit up and burned down. The two unknown girls died as well.

Dream
By Courtney Caldwell

To walk down the runway
In a Fashion Show
To twirl and to pose
Till the sun turns to snow
Then prepare for photo shoot
Underneath bright lights
Reflecting my natural beauty,
And my height- -
Yes, that’s My Dream!

To walk down the runway
In the faces of the fashion show
Pose! Twirl! Pose!
Till the sun is snow,
Get into character…
A bright, 100watt light…
Glistening my beauty
Black like Me

The Things I’m From
Farrah Zapata

I am from watching TV
And lying on the bed.
I am from loud music
playing on the radio and
People singing along

I am from loud people
Screaming outside the streets.
I am from the corner store and
Fast cars honking.

I am from competing with my sister
While getting in trouble.
I am from bothering my little brother
And screaming at my older brother.

I am from “Through suffering comes intelligence.”
And “If you don’t stand for something,
You’ll fall for anything.”

I am from Ecuador and from ceviche.
I am from sharing everything with my sister
And playing around causing trouble.

She Remembers
Farrah Zapata

She remembers fighting with her brothers and sisters and screaming at them. She remembers her first dog coming in the house and smelling almost everything. She remembers going to her father’s house playing and getting in trouble. She remembers her little brother being born and looking confused at the people around him. She remembers her second dog arriving at the house and frightened of her surroundings. She remembers her big brother getting in trouble for his bad grades and getting into trouble with the police. She remembers blaming her little brother for her mess. She remembers her big brother picking her up from school with all his friends. She remembers working hard in school and wanting to quit and not care. She remembers her pet iguana dying and only living for a short period of time. She remembers her first day of high school and feeling nervous that day. She remembers a lot of things but especially about her family.

I Am
Farrah Zapata

I am Farrah.
I am tan like the sand;
I am Ecuador.

I am not poverty
Or violence on the streets.
I am not AIDS.

I am amusing cities.
I am people having fun.
I am warm weather
And amusing cities.

I am confused.
I am at times overwhelmed
And lost.
Living in a big city feeling alone,
I can’t find anyone like me.

I am Farrah.
I am tan like the sand;
I am Ecuador.

Being a Twin
Farrah Zapata

Being a twin is the hardest thing in the world.
I don’t know why people like to compare.
She can be the most annoying girl,
People really think I actually care.

I couldn’t care less if I am shorter.
We constantly fight as if we were in a war.
We fight for who’s the favorite daughter,
And it makes me not like her anymore.

I then try to escape in my room.
But then I realize we both share it.
When I see her coming I slam the door, Boom!
I say out loud I am going to have a fit.

I think to myself I will never win,
But at the end of the day she is my twin.

I am Sasha
Sashagay Frasier

I am Sasha
I’m quiet as a mouse,
Light like the caramel.

I am Jamaica.
I am not violent,
Or hungry,
Or guns on the street.

I am an arched flower
Hanging from a tree.
I am a young girl dancing
To the sweet sound of music.

In my mind,
I am a little island
With the hot sunshine and
Yearlong beautiful plants.

I am so lost here.
I though New York
Would be what I expected.
But it’s not.
I thought there would be
People like me.
But I was wrong.

I am Sasha
Quiet as a mouse
From Jamaica.

Where I am From
Sashagay Frasier

I am from pictures
Of my closes friends and
Family on my walls.
I am from watching television
And dancing to
Music in my room.

I am from corner stores,
Getty gas stations
And a park where the kids
Play on my block.

I am from my best friend
Who can really be myself around
And do what I want or
Share personal information with.

I am from the people who say
“One hand washes the other,“
“Silent rivers run deep,”
And “Keep your friends close
And your enemies closer.”

I am from Jamaican descendants
Where we dance to reggae music
And goes to parties on weekends.

In September 2, 2001, I met my best friend in grade 8. Her name is Sanchia Rose but her friends called her “Samantha” or “Sam.” She is a Libra and she is born September 29, 1988. She is of light complexion, slim built and she is about 5’ 7” inches. Sanchia lived in Islington Saint Mary, Jamaica. She used to two sisters and a baby brother by her mother and two sisters by her father. Sanchia is the oldest child for both parents; her mother and father separated when she was two years old.
Sanchia and I were role models for many people both young and old. Many want to be like us because they have never seen us have a disagreement for more than one day. We’ve talked about everything and nothing at the same time; we know everything about each other. When we are at school we are always together so everyone at the school knows us for our friendship. If they don’t see us together, they will ask where our second half is. This is a story of a true friendship.

MY BEST FRIEND
Sashagay Frasier

My best friend is like the twin sister I never had. My best friend and I talk about everything; when I needed someone to talk to she is always there and she is always giving me good advice. My best friend is tall and thin with long dark brown hair with dark brown eyes and she has a light complexion. She speaks English but her first language is Jamaica Patois so she doesn’t speak proper English.

My best friend doesn’t like to spend her money so she always depends on someone to get her what she wants. Her cousin tells her to start working so she can have her own money to buy whatever she wants but especially to pay her school fees so she could go back to school to continue her studying. We all want her stop depending on her parents so she could even rent her own house. It is funny to see how different we are and yet, she is my twin.

I am a flower that blooms in the desert.
