I am one of the luckiest people in the world. I have had the opportunity over the last few years to engage in a labor of love - building a new small high school in the great neighborhood of Bushwick. In doing so I have worked with colleagues, students, and parents that have taught me a great deal about love, community, education, and dedication. I believe we are all teachers and students and that the greatest lesson we can learn is just how much others have to teach us.
I have taught for almost ten years in New york City. I live in Brooklyn with my beautiful and patient wife Debra and daughter Maud. My favorite book is Moby Dick because I was told I would never finish it and I did, twice. A quote that helps me get through the tough times is from the Buddha, "Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule."

Originally from Connecticut, Terri Germain studied mathematics as an undergraduate major at Adelphi and Secondary Education as a graduate student there. She worked in both the School of Education and the Office of Information Technology as a graduate assistant, and following that interned and student taught at Mepham High School in Bellmore on Long Island. She also worked on Long Island before coming on as one of the original math teachers at Bushwick School for Social Justice. She is determined that all students can be successful in mathematics, and truly enjoys waking up every day to do a job she loves. She attended Queens College and earned her Advanced Certificate in Administration and Supervision, and upon completion of this program has begun to work at both BSSJ and the Academy of Urban Planning as an Assistant Principal. On weekends, you might find her rollerblading around the city parks or cooking up a favorite dish or dessert. In the summer her favorite place to be is on Vinalhaven, an island off the coast of mid-coast Maine. She loves to read and can't get enough of spending time and playing with friends and family. |

Hi! This is my first year as an English as a Second Language teacher. I chose to come to BSSJ because of its focus on fostering tolerance in young people. I live in Brooklyn and love it! My passions include speaking and learning different languages - I can speak Spanish and a little Telugu, and I'm trying to learn Hindi. Two of my favorite books are I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb and 365 Tao by Deng Ming-Dao. My goals are to create more communication between native and non-native English speakers and to support all students emotionally and academically to the best of my ability. I believe that having a sense of humor can make (almost) every day enjoyable. I think teenagers have a lot to offer this world and I am excited to work with the students at BSSJ. |

My name is Kenya Wade. I was born in Far Rockaway, Queens, but lived in Brooklyn my whole life and now I'm moving back to Queens. I went to Martin Luther Jr, High School in Manhattan. I have been in the system as a teacher for four and half years. I love sports, reading, and enjoying time with my two and a half year old son. My favorite movie is the Color Purple and Coming to America. My inspirational quote is: "Do what you love and love what you do." in May 2006 I graduated from Long Island university with my Masters of Science in Health Professions. I have been teaching for five years. In addition to BSSJ, I worked for two years at I.S. 162 in Bushwick. I love being at BSSJ because the social justice theme aligns with the reasons I became a teacher. I feel our strong advisory program is essential and revolutionary. I am from Boston, but have lived in Philadelphia, and all over Brooklyn. I love projects of all kinds, particularly sewing and making things for my home. Finally, I am a Gemini who enjoys long walks on the beach and meaningful conversation over coffee. |
